Choosing a blue spirulina supplier.

Two blue powders can look identical in the bag and perform completely differently in a bowl. Here's what to check before you choose a supplier.

01Make sure it's actually spirulina extract

Blue spirulina should be phycocyanin extracted from spirulina, not a blend coloured with synthetic dyes, and not "blue" green spirulina. Check the ingredient list: it should name spirulina extract or phycocyanin. Ask the supplier how it's made and whether any carriers (such as maltodextrin) are added.

02Colour strength

Phycocyanin content varies between products, which affects how much powder you need for the same colour. A stronger product can cost more per kilo but less per serve. Ask for a specification sheet that states colour value or phycocyanin content, then test a sample in your actual recipe.

03Origin and documentation

Ask where the spirulina is grown and processed. A reliable supplier should be able to provide a specification sheet and a certificate of analysis for each batch, covering microbiological testing and contaminants, and should be able to trace the product back to its source. For food businesses, this paperwork matters as much as the product.

04Taste test

Good blue spirulina is almost flavourless. A noticeable fishy or seaweed taste can mean lower purity or poor storage. Mix a little into water or milk and taste it on its own before committing.

05Packaging and storage

Phycocyanin is sensitive to light, heat and moisture. Look for sealed, light-proof, resealable packaging, and ask how the product is stored before it reaches you. Clumping or fading colour are signs of moisture or age.

06Pack sizes and supply

Choose a pack size you'll use while it's fresh. A small café might prefer retail-size pouches, while a busy bowl bar or manufacturer will want bulk foodservice packs. Check that the supplier keeps stock in Australia, so you're not waiting on international shipping when you run low.

07Our blue spirulina

We supply Japan-grown blue spirulina powder in 150g retail pouches and 1kg foodservice packs, with specifications available on request. Ask us for a sample to test in your recipes.
