Sixteen years of purple.
Purple Foods began with three mates, a trip to Brazil, and a craving that wouldn't quit once they got home.
"We were easily able to recreate the sun and the surf — but not the açaí."
A trip to Brazil
Adam and two of his closest friends spend months travelling through South America, and in Brazil they meet açaí — on the beach, after surf, at breakfast, every single day. It's cheap, it's everywhere, and it's nowhere at all back in Australia. The sun and the surf were easy enough to recreate at home. The açaí wasn't.
Purple? Foods is born
The trio come home and start importing frozen açaí themselves. The company name gets a question mark because the future genuinely had one — nobody knew whether Australia would take to a frozen purple berry from the Amazon. The mission was simpler than the punctuation: satisfy the craving, and put purple smiles on faces all over Australia.
Explaining, sampling, converting
Nobody knew what açaí was, how to serve it, or how to say it. The early years were spent one café at a time — dropping samples, teaching bowl builds, and coaching baristas through "ah-sah-EE". Slowly, the first bowls went on Melbourne menus.
Not all açaí is created equal
As bowls sweep the country, cheap açaí floods in behind them — and the difference shows. Quality, colour, consistency and taste vary wildly between grades, so we plant our flag on the top grade — 14% fruit solids, certified organic. Pink pitaya joins as our first expansion, then IQF fruit and blue spirulina.
Wholesale, pure & simple
We're 100% wholesale and B2B — freezer warehousing in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, supplying cafés, juice bars, grocers, distributors and manufacturers. Our soft serve and scoopable sorbet are manufactured in Melbourne from Brazilian açaí, and somewhere past fifteen million bowls have been built on our fruit.
The cube era
Our biggest push yet: portion-ready açaí cubes — 9kg cartons of three 3kg pouches — and 18kg pails built for manufacturing. Less thawing, less waste, faster service. The question mark worked out fine.
"Not all açaí is created equal."
Still family-run. Still fussy about fruit.
